Lolita's Personality

They enjoy playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local restaurants and bars. The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which could be a problem in condos and apartments or near young children who may be frightened by their roar.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are hard to differentiate. Because of this the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is determined, breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care
For decades activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the sea.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her by putting her through head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member and plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean and not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her departure from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean and she will be able to swim deep in the water, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
